I'm making plans for Katsucon 2010. I plan to take a flight from California and arrive at the Washington Dulles International Airport. I have never been to DC before and I was wondering if the people who has traveled before to the Dulles airport what ground transportation do you usually take to go to the hotel?

I know there are available cabs, shuttles and I believe the monorail or train.
Which one do you think is the best and the cheapest to take to the Gaylord where Katsucon will be taking place?

Any help I'll really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Aw have fun at Katsucon! I usually go, but this year no money. I usually fly to Baltimore. Last year, we took the metro rail line, but I think they changed the location again this year. xx

I agree with Tess. If there's any way you can transfer your flight to one coming in at Reagan, you'll be happier (and a bit cheaper) for it. Flights into/out of Dulles are pretty pricey compared to the other airports in the area. I'm sure you still have time to rearrange the flight.

If you're still coming into Dulles, your best bet is to take the Washington Flyer, the airport's personal taxi service. I live about 15 minutes east from Dulles airport and it only takes 35-40 minutes to go further east to the Gaylord. It will be expensive, though :/

I'll try to change flights because it is going to be really expensive that way.
Thank you!

Oh gosh, Dulles? You have quite a commute ahead of you! [For future reference, Raegan is only around 10 minutes from the National Harbor and would have had hotel shuttles to/from the Gaylord, so that would have been the best choice to fly into.] Dulles is probably 45-60 minutes away, maybe more depending upon traffic. DC is CRAZY during rush hour. I did a search and couldn't come up with any hotel shuttles running that far out, so I think your best option is booking a Super Shuttle. Unfortunately, this is going to add another chunk of money to your expenses, since their website gave me a quote of $86 roundtrip. It's a good service, though, and I recommend it. I used SS when I flew into LAX when AX was still in Anaheim, and that was quite a ride in itself. If you Google around, you might find a discount or coupon to cut down on the price a little, since I know SS does that sort of thing.

Other than that, my only other suggestion would be to make a post on Cosplay.com or Katsucon.com and ask if anyone from the DC area might be willing to give you a ride from/to the airport in exchange for compensation. I bet a lot of otaku would jump at the chance to make a quick buck to spend in the dealer's room. XD

Sorry I can't help you out, but I'm driving in from the north, which is nowhere near where you'll be. ^__^; Good luck!

Thank you!

I didn't know the Dulles was that far away. I like to fly with Virgin America and since they only fly to Dulles that is why that was my main plan. But now that I know this, I'll change airlines. I will check on Super shuttle too.
Thank you so much for your comments! ^_^

Not a problem! I hope everything works out, and will keep my fingers crossed that we actually run into each other at the con! <3
